Everton register first EPL win defeating Arsenal

Demarai Gray’s last-minute goal helped Everton beat Arsenal 2–1 in their English Premier League football tournament to register their first win in the last eight matches. Martin Odegaard scored in injury time of the first half to give Arsenal the lead. Gray scored the winning goal in the second minute of ‘injury time’ of the second half. Earlier, Richarlison had leveled Everton in the 79th minute.

Everton fans celebrated inside the stadium after the match ended on a 2-1 match score. Earlier, after 27 minutes of play, some Everton supporters left the stadium, boycotting the match in protest against club officials. Everton has not won the trophy for the last 27 years. This is Arsenal’s second consecutive defeat. Earlier on Thursday, the Gunners were defeated 3-2 by Manchester United.

Speaking to the press after the game, manager Mikel Arteta said: “It could’ve been very different but we haven’t managed to do that. In the Premier League, you have to manage when you have the game there for the killing and the opponent there for the taking. We haven’t done it today and we had big chances but we didn’t put in the net. I’m concerned about the way we played and not about the structure but actually how we executed what we wanted and it wasn’t good enough.”

He added: “If we find excuses we are never going to get it right. That decision was made, I’m sure VAR reviewed it. What I want is more from my team by learning from what happened in the game because against United we deserved more but today we had the game under control even if we weren’t playing at our best. We have to find a way to win it. When you lose two in a row in the way in which we conceded the goal of course – losing a match for this club is not good.”
