Durand Cup groups announced, Mohammedan will face IAF in opener

In the opening match of the 130th edition of the Durand Cup, Mohammedan SC will face the Indian Air Force (IAF). Asia’s oldest football tournament Durand Cup is scheduled to commence on September 5 and will be continued till October 3.  

A total of 16 teams in four groups will face each other for the title, which will be organized by the Indian Armed Forces and the Government of West Bengal. Mohammedan SC, the first winning team of the Durand Cup, has been placed in Group A along with Bengaluru United, Indian Air Force and Central Reserve Police Force.

Group B consists of Indian Super League (ISL) teams FC Goa and Jamshedpur FC along with I-League team Sudeva Delhi FC and the 2016 Durand Cup winners Army Green football team. Bengaluru Football Club and Kerala Blasters Football Club are placed in Group C along with two ISL teams Delhi FC and Indian Navy Football Team. The Blasters team will make their debut in the Durand Cup.

The fourth and final Group D comprises Assam Rifles and Army Red, ISL’s Hyderabad FC, and current Durand Cup and I League champions Gokulam Kerala Football Club. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. The two semi-finals will be played on September 27 and 29, while the final and the decider match will be played on October 3, 2021.
