The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the 130th Durand Cup football tournament has canceled the quarter-final match Army Red vs FC Bengaluru United (FCBU) to be held at Kalyani Stadium on Friday due to reports of positive COVID-19 cases in the Red Army team. As a result, the Red Army team decided to withdraw from the tournament, and FCBU was handed a semi-final bye.
“All decisions were taken primarily keeping in mind the health and safety of the players and officials and the continuity and success of the tournament,” an official statement said. Bengaluru United advanced to the Durand Cup semis after Army Red withdraws from the competition due to COVID-19 concerns.
General Repswal (Chief of Staff, East Central Command, SM, VSM) on 2 September confirmed Kolkata as the home of the Durand Cup till 2025. “The 129th edition of Durand Cup was held in Kolkata in 2019. The kind of response the tournament received in Kolkata was huge with the exceptional support of the state government. I must mention this because “every state government department worked hard to ensure the success of the tournament. You all will be very happy to know that Durand Cup will be held in Kolkata in the next five years.”
In the 129th previous edition held for the first time in the city, Gokulam Kerala emerged champions by defeating Mohun Bagan 2–1 in front of a packed stadium, to record the first silverware in the club’s history.
