In the Supercup played on Tuesday evening, Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice and Thomas Müller adding another. The first half was a blink-and-you-miss affair, with chances seemingly appearing and disappearing by the minute.
Bayern targeted BVB right-back Felix Passlack early on, robbing him of possession three times to set up presentable scoring chances, but neither Kingsley Coman (twice) nor Müller was able to convert. On the other hand, Dortmund was dangerous going forward, and to deny Marco Reus after a sensational through-ball from Jude Bellingham, Bayern needed a world-class save from Manuel Neuer.
Lewandowski took the lead scoring the opening goal with a powerful header from Serge Gnabry’s cross to give the visitors the lead at halftime. Soon after the break, Bayern fouled their match score when Passlack was dragged out of position, allowing Alphonso Davies to stride to the byline and cross into the middle for Lewandowski.
With Jude Bellingham teeing up Reus to bend a stunning shot past Neuer from the edge of the area, Dortmund’s retaliation was not accidental. Just as it appeared that BVB might mount a comeback after being whipped into a frenzy by the home crowd, they conceded again when Manuel Akanji was too careless in possession at the back.
Corentin Tolisso intercepted and poked the ball into the path of Lewandowski, who gratefully accepted the gift when one-on-one with Kobel. until the final whistle, the pace of the game remained frenetic, with both teams seeking to add to the scoreline, but there were no further goals as Bayern claimed the Supercup trophy for the ninth time.
