De Bruyne played in severe discomfort this season

Kevin De Bruyne has been suffering from an ankle injury for over four months after attempting to play through it at Euro 2020. This season while playing for football club Manchester City Kevin De Bruyne has been in “severe discomfort” but he believes his condition is improving.

Beginning with a collision with Antonio Rudiger in the Champions League final, which resulted in a shattered nose and eye socket the Belgian international has had a difficult few months due to injuries. De Bruyne was able to return in time for Belgium’s ultimately disastrous Euro 2020 campaign, albeit he was injured again in the last-16 triumph against Portugal.

De Bruyne had ankle ligament damage on that occasion, but he still played in Belgium’s next game, which they lost to eventual champions Italy. In City’s Premier League opening the midfielder was able to make a brief appearance due to the injury, before disappearing until September, and he claims he is still not fully recovered.

“It’s going to be a little more difficult this year than usual,” De Bruyne said on the MIDMID podcast. “It’s not that bad, I think, but it’s been a bit difficult physically and mentally. I came back with a lot of pain after the holidays, and then at the start of the season, I hit a wall.

“I’ve been in some serious pain, but it’s starting to get better. I just needed more time than expected,” he added. De Bruyne’s impact at City has not dwindled in the Premier League this season in spite of his decision to play in discomfort.
