Confirmed: Netflix to make a film on 1999 Women’s World Cup

A documentary film about the U.S. women’s national team that won the World Cup on home field in 1999, will be produced by Netflix.

The entertainment company also purchased the rights to the book by Jere Longman, “The Girls of Summer: The US Women’s Soccer Team and how it Changed The World.”

Liza Chasin (Darkest Hour, Baby Driver, Love Actually), along with Hayley Stool and Ross Greenburg are going to direct the project.

The executive producers will be President and CEO of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Marla Messing, Jill Mazursky, and Krista Smith.

In women’s game culture, the 1999 Women’s World Cup is considered a groundbreaking time.

The game culminated with the final at the Rose Bowl in Southern California, with the United States emerging successful after 120 scoreless minutes in a penalty shootout against China.

USWNT goalkeeper Brandi Chastain created a memorable moment after hitting the World Cup-winning penalty and ripped off her jersey.
