Chennaiyin FC signed young Indian midfielder Ninthoi Meetei on Tuesday. Two-time Indian Super League (ISL) football champions roped Meetei in a three-year deal. Born in Imphal, the 20-year-old Meitei was part of the Indian team in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by India. Meetei was adjudged the best player when India won the SAFF Under-18 Championship title for the first time in 2019.
Right winger Meetei, who was a part of the AIFF Elite Academy, started his professional career with the Indian Arrows in 2017 and played for two years with the I-League club. He played a total of 27 matches for the team including two Super Cup matches.
“I am really feeling very happy to be a part of this club (CFC). This team has that energy and spirit through all these years. I am looking forward to giving the team my best and I am very much excited to kick off with Chennaiyin FC,” said Ninthoi Meetei, confirming the transfer news.
Chennaiyin FC head coach Bozidar Bandovic, who was appointed for the post earlier this year, is pleased to have the youngster in his squad. CFC head coach Bozidar Bandovic said, “Ninthoi is a quality young player with space to improve. Our target is to build, work and improve young domestic players because they are the future.
CFC co-owner Vita Dani said, “We are very happy to bring in someone like Ninthoi. He is young but already has 24 ISL appearances under his belt and should help the team for years to come.”
Meetei made his ISL debut for NorthEast United and played 24 matches for the team in two years. Before joining the NorthEast United the 20-year-old made his I-League debut with AIFF developmental side Indian Arrows. Last season, the Manipur-based footballer played in 13 matches for the Highlanders.
