Champions League – Manchester City vs RB Leipzig prediction, team news, lineup

On Wednesday evening Manchester City will begin their quest for European success against RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium. Citizens are looking to avenge years of Champions League heartbreak. In the final of the 2020-21 season, the hosts were defeated by Chelsea, while Leipzig was eliminated in the last 16 by Liverpool. Here is our expert guess on Manchester City vs RB Leipzig football prediction, team news, and lineup for the first Champions League match of the season.

Team news

Manchester City

Benjamin Mendy has been remanded in police custody and after testing positive for COVID-19 Zack Steffen will be disqualified.

John Stones and Oleksandr Zinchenko will be hoping for some defensive rotation as they have yet to start a competitive game for City this season.

For the visitors, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, and Riyad Mahrez are all in contention.

RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig will take the trip to Manchester without injured Marcelo Saracchi and Marcel Halstenberg.

Angelino played 58 minutes of his injury comeback last weekend, but is expected to start here, and Jesse Marsch may also start Lukas Klostermann in place of Nordi Mukiele at right-back.

In Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Bayern Munich, Tyler Adams, Amadou Haidara, and Emil Forsberg were among the substitutes and could return to the starting lineup.

Manchester City vs RB Leipzig Prediction

Manchester City has won three Premier League matches scoring 11 goals and conceding none. Losing three of their last four league games RB Leipzig has struggled under Jesse Marsch.

Leipzig will be hoping to avoid the repeat of last season’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester United in the group stage.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Marsch’s team managed to break the Premier League champions’ defensive resistance. Despite their struggles, Leipzig has a lot of attacking talent.

City, on the other hand, has had a far superior start to the season and has their sights firmly set on the prize this time around, so we can only back Guardiola’s men to win convincingly.

Lineup

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Cancelo; Rodri, Gundogan, Silva; Mahrez, De Bruyne, Sterling

RB Leipzig possible starting lineup:

Gulacsi; Klostermann, Orban, Simakan, Angelino; Laimer, Haidara; Nkunku, Olmo, Szoboszlai; Silva

Our Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 RB Leipzig
