On Wednesday as they kept steering away from the relegation zone of La Liga, Celta Vigo beat Real Sociedad Champions League-chasing 1-0 away from home.
From the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime after being felled in the area by Diego Llorente, Celta’s talismanic forward Iago Aspas scored the only goal of the game. Llorente also gave away a spot-kick in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
Celta’s only shot on target in the 90 minutes was the penalty and they spent the second half sitting back and defending their lead, with Colombian defender Jeison Murillo producing an outstanding display to help shut down the hosts.
Taking Celta, 16th, seven points off the relegation zone, Alaves’ 6-0 thrashing on Sunday followed the victory. Meanwhile, as they sit in seventh, six behind Seville’s fourth-placed, the top four hopes of Sociedad are fading fast.
Alaves 0 – 1 Osasuna
Goals: 0-1 Lato 64′
Yellow cards: Oier 38′, Lato 52′, Ely 60′, Garcia 85′, Mendez 90+6′
Alaves: Pacheco; Navarro; Laguardia, Magallan, Lopez; Sainz, Fejsa, Pons, Mendez; Perez, Joselu
Osasuna: Martinez; Vidal, U.Garcia, Navas, D.Garcia, Estupinan; Brasanac, Sanjurjo, Merida; Cardona, R.Garcia
Osasuna virtually secured their safety in La Liga with a hard-fought win at Alaves, in a game of few chances for either side.
Toni Lato, on loan from Valencia, struck the decisive goal in the 64th minute, what was to be the only shot on target recorded throughout the game.
The result moves Osasuna up to 38 points and with seven remaining matches of the season, they are now 12 points clear of the drop zone and have all but secured their top-flight status.
This is their third setback in four games and follows a shocking six-goal loss on Sunday at Celta Vigo, as Alaves remain on 35 points and although their place in La Liga is not under immediate pressure.
This would also be a cause for concern that Asier Garitano’s side couldn’t even pick up a shot on goal for the whole match at their home stadium.
