Brighton held a draw with Crystal Palace with injury-time goal

Brighton snatched a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday, missing out on the chance to go top of the English Premier League. With the game’s final kick in the extra time, Neal Maupay leveled breaking Palace’s hope to win.

Reaching towards the end minutes of football match the Eagles thought they had won this derby when Wilfried Zaha fired home a penalty just before halftime. But they couldn’t celebrate the victory because Maupay raced onto Joel Veltman’s hopeful punt in the fifth minute of injury time, he kept his cool to lift the ball over Vicente Guaita and into the net.

It elicited wild celebrations from Graham Potter and the Albion bench, while the visiting fans threw a blue flare onto the field. A delirious Maupay chucked his shirt into the away crowd after a scuffle between Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and James McArthur. Potter’s team was not at their best, so it was a smash and grab.

The last-gasp goal was a role reversal of the one Christian Benteke scored for Palace in last season’s 2-1 win at the Amex. For the first time in 120 years’ history, Brighton would be able to reach the top flight with a win. They didn’t make it, but Maupay’s heroics – which saw him score his fourth goal of the season – kept their unbeaten record intact.
