Breaking: Middlesbrough has replaced Jonathan Woodgate

Middlesbrough has effectively replaced Jonathan Woodgate despite Neil Warnock and only eight games left to go in the Championship.

Middlesbrough has sacked Jonathan Woodgate, replacing him with Neil Warnock as head coach.

With immediate effect from the former Cardiff City boss Warnock taking charge, Woodgate was dismissed early on Tuesday.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach,” the club confirmed via a brief statement.

Just above the relegation zone, Boro is 21st with just eight matches remaining and on goal difference in the Championship table.

Since March’s coronavirus pandemic forced season suspension, last Saturday they lost 3-0 at home to Swansea City in their first match.

Woodgate was appointed last June as head coach, he has completed his playing career at the Riverside Stadium.

Having brought the Bluebirds to the Premier League in 2018 Warnock left Cardiff last November but struggled to keep them from being relegated to the second tier last season.

The first game in charge of the 71-year-old will be away to Stoke City on Saturday.
