Barcelona could generate £41m in January transfer window

Barcelona appears to have finances to spend during the January football transfer window however their financial woes prevented them from keeping Lionel Messi during the summer transfer window. The transfer budget of Barcelona is far from healthy, but by selling Inaki Pena, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti, and Philippe Coutinho the La Liga club may generate as much as £41m during the winter window.

In recent days the Catalan giants have been linked with a number of players, with the club’s new head coach Xavi rumoured to be interested in signing two new attackers. Pena, who is rated at £2.7 million by Transfermarkt, is rumoured to be looking for fresh pastures in January, and a recent report stated that Barcelona might be willing to let him go.

Meanwhile, making just six La Liga games Lenglet has fallen down the centre-back pecking order this season, with Ronald Araujo, Oscar Mingueza, Gerard Pique, and Eric Garcia all ahead of him for a starting berth. There would undoubtedly be interest in the Frenchman, who is valued at £16.2 million, and the fact that Barcelona is well-stocked at the back might lead to the Catalan club selling him at the start of 2022.

The same can be said for Umtiti, who was heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou over the summer but ultimately stayed. This season the £4.5m-rated Frenchman has yet to make a single appearance for the club but if he became available for a bargain price would pique interest, with Arsenal and Manchester United both rumoured to be interested.

On the other hand, Coutinho appears to be out of Xavi’s long-term plans, since the new head coach prefers to play a 4-3-3 system with two speedy wingers, leaving the Brazilian with no clear role going ahead. In this season so far the 29-year-old has made 11 appearances but has only scored once, and there has been much of talk about a January departure. The Brazilian is valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt, with Newcastle United being the team most heavily connected with his talents in recent weeks.
