Superstar striker Lionel Messi, who joined Ligue 1 football club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after his contract with Barcelona expired, has been included in Argentina’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. At the same time, striker Paulo Dybala has returned to the Argentine squad for the three matches of the World Cup qualifiers.
Copa America champions Argentina will play in a World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, Brazil, and Bolivia in September. Coach Lionel Scaloni has named most of the players from the team that won the Copa America title in July in Argentina’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers. These included Messi, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and Angel Di Maria, who scored the deciding goal in the final against Brazil.
In addition, Dybala has been included in the Argentina national team after almost two years due to his impressive performances for Juventus. Dybala was included in the Copa America squad in 2019. He has played 29 matches for Argentina so far.
Messi has not played a minute in competitive matches since helping Argentina beat Brazil in the Copa America final on July 11. Messi was unavailable in the first three league matches of PSG’s current campaign but has been training with the team.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has previously said Messi could make his debut for PSG against Reims in Ligue 1 next weekend before the international break takes effect. But, with Argentina’s coach Scoloni calling up Messi for the World Cup qualifiers in September, the wait for his debut with the French club may increase. Experienced Sergio Aguero will miss these matches due to injury.
