Hung Thinh Football Tournament: India Loses To Vietnam

In the second and final game of the Hung Thinh Football Tournament on Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City, India suffered a 0-3 loss to a higher-ranked Vietnam team. The 104th-ranked Indians, who had three easy victories in the Asian Cup qualifiers in June and a 1-1 draw against Singapore in this event on Saturday, were given a reality check when they were utterly outplayed in the second half by the 97th-ranked Vietnamese team.

The Vietnamese goals in the 10th, 49th, and 70th minutes—scored by Phan Van Duc, Nguyen Van Toan, and Nguyen Van Quyet—left the Indian defense helpless, especially in the second half. But the Indians remained competitive with their opponents in the first half before being destroyed in the second.

Vietnam won the competition with two victories in as many games. In their first game, they had also racked up a 4-0 victory over Singapore.

In the past, India and Vietnam had engaged in numerous notable contests. One of which being the 2002 LG Cup final, in which India won 3-1 after coming from behind to claim the championship.

The last time India and Vietnam played was in a friendly international match in Pune in 2010. The Blue Tigers won 3-1 with a hat-trick from Chhetri.

But football in Vietnam has been improving ever since. They can now compete with the best teams on the continent. Vietnamese advanced to the final round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers earlier this year. They also made to the round of eight for the 2019 Asian Cup.

When Phan Van Duc hit the goal in the 10th minute, the home team quickly jumped ahead. However, if goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and center-defense Sandesh Jhingan had communicated more effectively, the goal might have been prevented.
