Former Liverpool player refuses to accept the rumors about their mentality issues

Steve McManaman accepted that they didn’t have issues with mentality due to the lack of success of the club during his playing days.

the Merseyside outfit was the dominant force in English football during the 1970s and 1980s but they received their most top-flight title in 1990, having been forced to settle for sporadic cup success since then.

McManaman won just one FA Cup and one League Cup, but he believes that to add to the failure was more down to inconsistency than a mental block, during his nine-year stay at Anfield.

“We’ve certainly had a few more shortcomings than the side now but against the teams back then that just pipped us to the title. You know we could beat most of them on our day, we could outplay most of them over the season,” McManaman told Metro.

“We may have played more attractive football or scored more goals than them but it’s the couple of failures we had. Maybe our rivals had a better squad or a couple of better players.” continued Steve

“I don’t think it was a mentality thing or anything like that. It’s just every single year that there’s one team that unfortunately beats everyone else and if you don’t get to the top of the mountain then you can’t say that you’ve achieved it.” added Former Liverpool winger

“That was one thing we all look back on and believe we were good enough, we were on our day but we probably didn’t have enough over a 38-game period,” says McManaman

McManaman made 364 appearances for Liverpool before joining Real Madrid, where he twice won two titles for La Liga and the Champions League.
