The first female official to take authority of a Serie A match is, as said by the Italian Referees’ Association (AIA) when Sassuolo hosted Salernitana on Sunday. Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi joined Serie A’s officiating team in July. When Cagliari played Cittadella in the Coppa Italia, She became the first woman to officiate a top-level Italian match last year, 2019.
In a conference held on Wednesday, AIA president Alfredo Trentalange told the news that “This is a historic moment, it is a dream come true moment.” Working in the provincial and regional leagues, Caputi joined the referees’ association in 2007. Ferrieri Caputi is 31 years old and was promoted to the Italian league’s refereeing pool for this season.
In 2015, Caputi started refereeing, and in 2020, she was promoted to the third-tier Serie C for five years later.
In 2019, when she saw oversaw two Women’s European Championships, she began refereeing Serie C matches. She earned this step, and it is a success for the whole movement and we are about to experience a historic moment after more than 100 years, A big Thank you to those who believed in her.
Alfredo Trentalange said, “It’s not an ordinary day and I’m also moved by it,”. In a Serie A team last year, in Cagliari’s Italian Cup match against Cittadella, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi disallowed three goals during that game. She has become a part of the National referee’s committee, which allows her officially practice in first-division matches.
It became a historic day for Italian women’s football. In men’s football matches, women referees are increasing rapidly. In the following year, 2019, Caputi began refereeing Serie C matches, plus one Serie B clash between Cittadella and SPAL.
