Pulisic scored the winning goal for Chelsea against West Ham

Chelsea leaves it late to beat West Ham, with Pulisic popping up in the 90th minute to score the winning goal to clinch a 1-0 victory.

It looked like it would end goalless after Jorginho saw his poor penalty saved by Fabianski just a couple of minutes earlier, which also resulted in a straight red card for Dawson for denying Lukaku a goalscoring opportunity.

West Ham had defended well throughout, but there wasn’t enough time left on the clock to get an equaliser.

Starting lineup:

CHELSEA (3-4-1-2): Edouard Mendy; Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah; Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso; Mason Mount; Timo Werner, Kai Havertz.

CHELSEA SUBS: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic, Saul Niguez, Ross Barkley, Hakim Ziyech, Kenedy, Malang Sarr.

WEST HAM (3-4-2-1): Lukasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Craig Dawson, Aaron Cresswell; Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek, Mark Noble, Arthur Masuaku; Pablo Fornals, Andriy Yarmolenko; Said Benrahma.

WEST HAM SUBS: Alphonse Areola, Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini, Nikola Vlasic, Jarrod Bowen, Ryan Fredericks, Alex Kral, Declan Rice, Aji Alese.

PULISIC FIRES CHELSEA AHEAD! Mount releases Alonso down the left flank, and the wing-back delivers an excellent low cross into the box, which Pulisic runs onto the end of, and he fires the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Chelsea leads 1-0 with just minutes remaining.

What does it mean? Much-needed home boost for the Blues

If Chelsea had drawn, they would have only been three points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal, albeit having played fewer games.

That gap is now back to five points, though, with the Blues able to breathe a little easier in third. West Ham, meanwhile, has lost their last four away league games and are fortunate that fellow European hopefuls Wolves slipped up at Burnley.

So, what’s next?

Chelsea ended their three-game losing streak at home and tightened their grip on the third spot, opening up a five-point lead over Arsenal, and following up for the Blues is a trip to Manchester United on Thursday.

Meanwhile, West Ham remains seventh, and they’ll turn their attentions to the Europa League in midweek as they face Frankfurt in the semi-finals.
