The second half ends with Manchester United holding on to keep Chelsea at bay and share the points.
A minute after Chelsea’s long-awaited opener, Ronaldo’s equaliser did spark some life into the home side.
But it was still the Blues who remained in control but couldn’t find the net again and head home from Old Trafford, ruing two points dropped rather than one gained.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David De Gea; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane, Alex Telles; Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic; Anthony Elanga, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford; Cristiano Ronaldo.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Tom Heaton, Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Juan Mata, Hannibal Mejbri, Shola Shoretire, Alvaro Fernandez, Alejandro Garnacho.
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Edouard Mendy; Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger; Reece James, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso; Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner.
CHELSEA SUBS: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, Saul Niguez, Hakim Ziyech, Kenedy, Malang Sarr.
Chelsea finally gets the breakthrough!!! Another move sends the ball right, and Havertz heads on James’ cross into the box. It lands at Alonso’s feet, and the left-back smashes a low volley across De Gea and into the back of the net!!! However, it’s been alright, and Chelsea goes into a much deserved 1-0 lead.
United equalise right from the off!!! Kante’s long ball out of defence is cut out by Matic, who, after a failed pass is blocked by Kante, chips it over the top to Ronaldo, who brings the ball down and fires it beyond Mendy to make it 1-1.
So, what’s next?
The spoils shared don’t help either team, with Chelsea remaining third, albeit now eight points clear for the top four. Manchester United stay in the sixth but has played at least once more than all the sides around them, suggesting they could be set to drop further once their rivals catch up.
