Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Liverpool 2-0 Everton

Liverpool piles the pressure on Everton with a 2-0 win in the Merseyside derby.

There wasn’t much to shout about in the first half, though Doucoure came closest when he dragged a shot wide.

Liverpool upped the pressure after the break, and Robertson broke the deadlock with a close-range header.

Gray almost pulled Everton level but fired his shot just wide of the top corner.

Origi came off the bench to wrap it up when he thumped a header over Pickford into the roof of the net.

Starting lineup:

LIVERPOOL STARTING XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Naby Keita; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane.

LIVERPOOL SUBS: Divock Origi, Ibrahima Konate, Caoimhin Kelleher, Joe Gomez, Luis Diaz, Curtis Jones, Jordan Henderson, Kostas Tsimikas, James Milner.

EVERTON STARTING XI (4-3-3): Jordan Pickford; Seamus Coleman, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane, Vitalii Mykolenko; Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan, Alex Iwobi; Anthony Gordon, Richarlison, Demarai Gray.

ROBERTSON SCORES! Salah plays a one-two with Origi down the right to get away from Gordon before he curls a lovely cross into the far post. However, none of the Everton players spots Robertson’s run, and he nods his header down into the ground and past Pickford. 1-0 Liverpool.

ORIGI SCORES! Robertson’s corner is over everyone, but Henderson recycles it on the far side. Diaz goes for the spectacular with a bicycle kick, and it bounces back across the goal. Origi is waiting at the far post, and he heads it over the scrambling Pickford and into the roof of the net. 2-0 Liverpool.

So, what’s next?

That win means Liverpool is just one point behind league leaders in Manchester City again.

On Wednesday, their attention now turns to their Champions League semi-final first leg against Villarreal.

Everton stays in the relegation zone, two points from safety with a game in hand over Burnley.

It’s another tough test for them as they host Chelsea next time out.
