Chelsea 1-1 Leicester City

Chelsea

Chelsea has clinched third place in the Premier League despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.

Marcos Alonso wiped out James Maddison’s previous effort as the rewards were split.

Only a 19-goal swing in Tottenham’s favour would see the Blues replaced on the last day of the season.

Starting lineup:

CHELSEA (3-4-3): Edouard Mendy; Trevoh Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger; Reece James, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Marcos Alonso; Hakim Ziyech, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic.

LEICESTER CITY (3-1-4-2): Kasper Schmeichel; Daniel Amartey, Wesley Fofana, Jonny Evans; Nampalys Mendy; Timothy Castagne, James Maddison, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Luke Thomas; Jamie Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho.

Goals:

MADDISON!!! 1-0 LEICESTER! The visitors take the lead against the run of play! After Castagne latches onto Schmeichel’s long clearance, the ball breaks kindly for Maddison. The midfielder works space on the edge of the box before firing past Mendy.

ALONSO!!! 1-1! What a lovely equaliser by Chelsea! James produces a delicious diagonal ball into the area following a neat exchange of passes, where Alonso fantastically fires home on the volley.

What does it mean? Chelsea is close in on third, but home comforts are still lacking.

With a three-point advantage over Tottenham and a goal difference 18 better than Antonio Conte’s men.

Chelsea is virtually assured of their first top-three Premier League finish since the 2018-19 campaign.

However, Chelsea has won on just one of their last five outings at Stamford Bridge, limping over the line as they search for an end to the off-pitch uncertainty around the club.

Maddison strikes from range again.

Despite Leicester enduring an underwhelming season, Maddison has enjoyed his best goalscoring campaign for the Foxes, netting his 11th league goal of the season to open the scoring.

Since his Premier League debut in August 2018, the midfielder has scored 14 goals from outside the area in the competition – only James Ward-Prowse (15) scored more in that time.

So, what’s next?

Both sides are at home when the Premier League season concludes on Sunday.

Chelsea host Watford at Stamford Bridge, with Leicester welcoming Southampton to the King Power Stadium.
