Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was once again in the limelight as he scored his 110th international goal to surpass Iran legend Ali Daei’s figure as he broke the men’s record on Wednesday. However, Ronaldo was recorded as he slapped Irish defender Dara O’Shea during their World Cup qualifiers football match.
Ronaldo is making headlines since he was rumored to join PSG or Manchester City. Finally, he has now moved to his former club Manchester United. After breaking his international goals records he also made news as he lost his cool during the match when the star striker was seen surprisingly hitting Irish defender Dara O’Shea before awarding a penalty kick.
The incident took place only in the 15th minute of the match from the first whistle when Portugal received a penalty for fouling Bruno Fernandes inside the box. Meanwhile, Ronaldo stepped up to attempt a penalty, but West Brom defender O’Shea took the ball from the penalty spot, after which the Manchester United striker retaliated by hitting O’Shea in front.
In Portugal’s World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland Ronaldo slapped Irish defender and the 22-year-old fell to the ground holding his face, but former Juventus striker escaped any punishment. Here is the video of the incident:
Notably, Ronaldo missed a penalty in the first half of the game, but then scored a goal in the final minutes of the match to save the game and then fired another in the injury time, when Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland 2–1.
With this goal, the five-time Golden Ball winner has now scored 111 international goals and is now leading the charts. The former footballer had scored 109 international goals during his illustrious career spanning 13 years. Ronaldo had earlier equaled the Iranian legend’s record during Euro 2020.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is expected to play the first match of his second spell at Manchester United against Newcastle United on Saturday, September 11.
