EPL English Premier LeagueBurnley 1-3 Aston Villa

Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa secured all three points at Turf Moor with a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley.

The visitors led 2-0 at the break after goals from Ings and Buendia, despite several good opportunities for Burnley,

But Watkins grabbed his side’s third in 52 minutes to clinch the victory.

Villa controlled much of the remainder of the game and looked like keeping a clean sheet.

But a brief lack of concentration at the back in stoppage time allowed Cornet to sneak in and score a consolation goal for the Clarets.

Starting lineup:

BURNLEY (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Connor Roberts, Nathan Collins, James Tarkowski, Charlie Taylor; Dwight McNeil, Jack Cork, Josh Brownhill, Aaron Lennon; Ashley Barnes, Wout Weghorst.

BURNLEY SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Matthew Lowton, Dale Stephens, Maxwel Cornet, Erik Pieters, Phil Bardsley, Kevin Long, Bobby Thomas, Dara Costelloe.

ASTON VILLA (3-4-2-1): Emiliano Martinez; Calum Chambers, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings; Matty Cash, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Lucas Digne; Emi Buendia, Danny Ings; Ollie Watkins.

ASTON VILLA SUBS: Robin Olsen, Josh Feeney, Ashley Young, Marvelous Nakamba, Tim Iroegbunam, Carney Chukwuemeka, Philippe Coutinho, Morgan Sanson, Bertrand Traore.

1-0! The striker again sneaks in behind the Burnley defence as Buendia slides a lovely ball through to him, and Ings races onto it and then fires it past Pope and into the back of the net.

Buendia makes it 2-0 just after the half an hour mark to finish a lovely move by the visitors. Watkins picks up the ball inside the box down the left, he plays a one-two with Ings before Watkins feeds Digne on the overlap, and the left-back then picks out Buendia, who slides it into the back of the net. It takes a slight deflection off Tarkowski in the process.

Villa counters quickly and opens Burnley up at the back, with McGinn finding space down the left-wing, before whipping a superb cross into the box for Watkins, who powers a header into the back of the net. They lead 3-0!

Cornet makes it 3-1 in stoppage time! Villa switches off at the back, and Burnley capitalises on the counter-attack, with Cornet finding himself through on goal with just Martinez to beat, and he rounds the keeper and then fires the ball into the back of the net.

So, what’s next?

This result leaves Burnley just two points above Everton in 18th and level with Leeds, with both sides playing tomorrow.

Next up for the Clarets is a trip to Tottenham. Meanwhile, Villa moves up to 11th, and they’ll face Liverpool on Tuesday.
