Burgos dream of La Liga

The 36th minute of a football game has probably rarely been applauded as much as it was at El Plantio stadium. Burgos goalkeeper Jose Antonio Caro, often known as Churripi, overtook former Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo’s Spanish record of 755 minutes without giving up a goal at the start of a season on Saturday during a stunning 3-0 victory over league leaders Alaves.

The only club on the continent without a single goal conceded this season is far from a household name, even though many legendary sides may come to mind when evaluating the meanest European defenses of recent times. Burgos, a team in Spain’s second division, has had a fantastic start to the season that has kept them within three points of first place after nine games despite six goalless draws.

As Churripi‘s Spanish record for minutes without conceding at the start of a season was shown on the big screen, the home crowd cheered for the goalie. After going 810 minutes without conceding this season, the unbeaten black and whites travel to Andorra on Wednesday. Andorra is a quickly rising team that is owned by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.

If you include the end of the previous season, when Burgos finished 11th in their first season of professional football in 20 years, the total rises to 1,017 minutes. Burgos also has a potent offense, as evidenced by the emphatic victory against an Alaves squad that spent the previous six years in La Liga. The team’s defense stood out in the team’s first eight games. The supporters may have had unrealistic expectations, even though safety is now again the main issue.

Jose Antonio Caro, a goalkeeper for Burgos, broke Claudio Bravo’s record, which had stood since 2014. Michu, who assisted Swansea in 2013 in capturing the League Cup, retired at the age of 31 in 2017 due to a persistent ankle ailment. The Spaniard held the job at his brother’s previous club Oviedo before accepting an offer from Burgos four years ago, which he says he is “very grateful for.” He was given his first opportunity as sporting director at Langreo, which was then coached by his brother.

Burgos, who has never played at the highest level of Spanish football, will embark on an unprecedented season; how it will play out is still to be seen. Churripi will match the second division mark of 10 straight clean sheets in a season, achieved 52 years ago by San Andres goalkeeper Francisco Romero, if they avoid conceding versus Andorra. At that moment, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Abel Resino’s 1990–1991 record of 13 games without a loss would be within sight.
