Brentford 3-0 Southampton

Brentford secures a 3-0 win over Southampton to confirm their place in the Premier League next term.

Pontus Jansson put the home side ahead from close range before Yoane Wissa added a second a minute later with a composed finish.

The Saints wasted opportunities in front of goals throughout the afternoon.

The home side finally put them out of their misery when Kristoffer Ajer found the net in the 79th minute with a brilliant turn and strike.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was jeered by sections of Southampton supporters, putting Austrian under pressure in his role as the season reached its climax.

Starting lineup:

BRENTFORD (4-3-3): David Raya; Kristoffer Ajer, Pontus Jansson, Mads Bech Sorensen, Rico Henry; Mathias Jensen, Christian Norgaard, Christian Eriksen; Bryan Mbeumo, Ivan Toney, Yoane Wissa.

BRENTFORD SUBS: Josh Dasilva, Julian Jeanvier, Tarique Fosu-Mensah, Shandon Baptiste, Vitaly Janelt, Mads Roerslev Rasmussen, Finley Stevens, Nathan Young-Coombes, Jonas.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2): Fraser Forster; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu, Romain Perraud; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Ibrahima Diallo, Nathan Redmond; Adam Armstrong, Armando Broja.

SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Alex McCarthy, Lyanco, Oriol Romeu, Shane Long, Che Adams, Nathan Tella, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Yan Valery, Tyler Dibling.

1-0. As Jansson converts from Toney’s cutback at the near post, the home side takes the lead. Eriksen launches a corner deep into the middle from the right flank that Toney takes out of the air. He fakes the strike and then has space to drill a low cross towards the near post. Jansson sticks out a boot and does enough to steer it past Forster.

2-0. Wissa gets on the scoresheet with a composed finish to double the Bees’ advantage. Eriksen makes a good forward run into the Southampton half but gets brought down. Wissa gathers the loose ball and surges into the box before placing his effort away from Forster in the bottom-right corner.

3-0. The home side kills off the game as Ajer produces a fine turn and strike in the box. Brentford knocked the ball around the edge of the Southampton penalty area before Norgaard picked out Ajer. He skips past Perraud and Salisiu before slotting his effort under Forster into the back of the net. Cool as you like.

So, what’s next?

Brentford can still play a decisive role in the Premier League relegation battle when they take on Everton next Sunday at Goodison Park. Southampton is next in action against Liverpool on May 17 on home soil.
