AC Milan Champions of Italy 2021-22

At the third attempt, the first win against Sassuolo is enough to crown AC Milan as Italian champions, with 86 points, two ahead of rivals Inter, to secure their first title since 2010-11.

The work was done for the Rossoneri by halftime, when a double from Giroud and a farewell strike from Kessie, both assisted by Leao, gave them an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.

After the resumption, the sting was taken out of the game. The Neroverdi aimed to minimise the damage and Milan content to see out the remaining 45 minutes in comfort en way to a title victory.

The convincing performance seals Milan’s 19th Scudetto – the first title for Pioli – while Sassuolo finishes the year in 10th place.

Starting lineup:

SASSUOLO XI (4-2-3-1): Andrea Consigli; Georgios Kyriakopoulos, Gian Marco Ferrari(c), Kaan Ayhan, Mert Muldur; Matheus Henrique, Maxime Lopez, Davide Frattesi; Giacomo Raspadori, Gianluca Scamacca, Domenico Berardi.

MILAN XI (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan; Davide Calabria(c) Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Sandro Tonali, Franck Kessie; Alexis Saelemaekers, Rade Krunic, Rafael Leao; Olivier Giroud.

GIROUD GIVES MILAN THE LEAD! 1-0 TO THE ROSSONERI! Ayhan is caught in possession on the halfway line, eventually ceding the ball to Leao. The winger then bursts forward and gets into the penalty area before cutting it back to Giroud. The striker takes his shot on the swivel and manages to squeak it underneath Consigli to take the lead!

GIROUD MAKES IT TWO! 2-0! Another cutback, another goal for Milan after Ferrari loses possession inside his penalty area to Leao before forcing the winger out of the 18-yard box. The Portugal international then beat his man while driving to the byline and passes it towards the penalty spot for Giroud – whose simple finish beats Consigli!

IT’S A FAREWELL GOAL FOR KESSIE! 3-0! In his last match for Milan before a summer transfer to Barcelona, the Ivory Coast international gives Milan a three-goal cushion – latching onto Leao’s cutback pass and hitting a powerful first-time effort with the inside of his foot!
